For years I have been a total cheapskate when it comes to sunglasses. I’ll buy a $10 mall pair and keep them for 2 or 3 years. I don’t lose them, and I’ve only ever broken one pair. However, a number of my friends insist that Oakley is the way to go. I decided to give it a shot… I drive a lot and was noticing a lot of glare and things like that.
Mom and I went to Sunglass Station in the Promenade at Chenal a couple weeks ago – the manager there is great. She really knows her stuff and was really helpful in selling me (a salesman!) on why I should upgrade from Cheapo glasses to something much nicer.
I went in thinking I wanted the Oakley Gascan. I tried them on and they looked stupid on my big head. :-/ She suggested then that I try the Crankcase. I tried them on and liked the look, but couldn’t justify the price. She then had me put on my previous glasses and step outside, then with the new glasses. The difference in color and vibrancy was nuts! She also had me look at a stained glass piece in the store – with my previous sunglasses, it just looked white. With the polarized lenses in the Crankcase, it was (of course) beautiful, vibrant color.
So, after a few weeks with the Crankcase, here are my thoughts:
- the color is brilliant. It’s still amazing and I love it.
- I like the look… I’m terrified I’m going to do something to scratch them… hopefully this anxiety curbs with time…
- I love the way it feels on my face – don’t really even notice them. However, after wearing for a long time (over 2 hours), they start to hurt my ears a bit because the arms are so wide. However, this may just be an adjustment (I wore the previous glasses for at least 2 years – I think I had to adjust to them as well).
That being said, I think I’m sold on Oakley for the next while. What about you guys? To spend or not to spend?
